Are you looking to improve your vision but have been advised that you are unsuitable for laser eye surgery? Luckily, modern technology means that you still have options and can look forward to a future without daily contact lenses or glasses.
Both Implantable Contact Lenses and the Lens Replacement procedure can permanently improve your eyesight, and eliminate the need for temporary solutions.
Here are the benefits and key features of each treatment.
Implantable Contact Lenses
If you have been refused laser treatment because of a complex prescription or a thin cornea then Implantable Contact Lenses may be the best solution.
An Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is a small lens that is implanted into the eye in the space between your iris and your natural lens. It is made from collamer – a safe, biocompatible material which is composed of collagen and co-polymer.
Unlike temporary contact lenses, once the lens has been placed into the eye, there is no maintenance required – it is invisible and does not change the eye colour – you can simply forget about it and enjoy clearer, more detailed vision! However, in the unlikely event you change your mind about keeping the lenses, the procedure is fully reversible (unlike laser eye surgery).
At AVC, we use state-of-the- art EVO Visian ICL’s, which have been approved in Europe since 1997, and FDA approved in the US since 2005. We were the first clinic in the UK to implant an ICL for a patient with long-sightedness.
Our surgeons have more than 15 years experience providing this treatment, and AVC is the only clinic in the world whose pioneering ICL surgeon has had the treatment himself. Dr Goran Helgason (ICL surgeon & trainer) is a testament to the effectiveness of ICL’s.
Here are some interesting facts about EVO Visian ICL’s:
- 20/20 vision is achievable even for complex prescriptions
- No modification of the cornea is needed. The lenses are suitable for those people who cannot have laser treatment, or patients with thin/abnormal corneas
- The lenses do not lead to dry eye syndrome
- One ICL is implanted every 8 minutes and over 950,000 procedures have been done worldwide
- 99.4% of patients would have the ICL procedure again
These lenses function in the same way as glasses and contact lenses by changing the way light is focused on to the retina. The latest design of the Visian V4C lens with Centraflow technology has an innovative feature which further enhances the safety of the treatment and reduces the procedure duration.
Clear Lens Exchange/ Lens Replacement Surgery
An increasingly popular procedure in the UK, Clear Lens Exchange is ideal for people over the age of 40 that have developed a reading prescription.
Lens Exchange Surgery eliminates the need for varifocal or bifocal glasses and multifocal contact lenses – it involves removing your natural eye lens and replacing it with an artificial Intraocular Lens (IOL) to permanently correct your vision.
A major benefit of Lens Exchange is that it can improve both distance vision issues and reading problems, giving you a vastly better range of eyesight. As the implanted lenses are artificial, there is also no chance of developing cataracts in the future.
Patients who have this procedure enjoy good distance, intermediate, and reading vision for the rest of their lives.
Clear Lens Exchange/Lens Replacement treatment generally takes less than 20 minutes per eye and each eye is treated separately over consecutive days. The procedure can be used to completely restore your vision and free you from relying on multiple pairs of glasses and contact lenses .
It is one of the most common eye operations in the world, with over 300,000 procedures performed in the UK each year.
