Presbyopic patients truly can achieve freedom from spectacles for distance, intermediate and near vision. Trifocal Intraocular Lenses (IOL) are the new generation of multifocal IOLs. We have been using these implantable lenses for 4 years with great success. Older multifocal IOLs achieved clear distance and near vision but used to let the patient down for intermediate tasks. This is when “top up” near or computer spectacles were often recommended.
Types of Trifocal Intraocular Lenses
There are 2 trifocal IOL’s available, the FineVision by PhysIOL and AT LISA Tri by Zeiss. Both are available in a toric form.
The design of the PhysIOL FineVision lens is a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens. It gives three useful focal points by combining two superimposed diffractive profiles, one with a +1.75 D addition for intermediate vision and the other one with a +3.50 D addition for near vision.
The design of the PhysIOL FineVision lens provides patients with clear vision over a range of distances with minimal glare and halo. The improved intermediate vision has not impacted the distance and near vision. The vision quality in various lighting levels also seems to be far superior than that is achieved with the old multifocal IOLs. Studies have shown 87% of patients become independent of spectacles with the use of physiol FineVision IOLs.
The Zeiss AT LISA Tri has an optimised optic zone and this helps to provide good intermediate vision without compromising the distance and near vision. The near addition is +3.33 which gives a comfortable working distance of 40cm and the intermediate addition of +1.66 allows for working at 80cm.
Intraocular lenses have improved leaps and bounds and are becoming a more popular choice for patients. Advanced Vision Care is at the forefront of these lenses and use them for all suitable patients with huge success.
