Our LASEK Expertise
If we find that your eyes are not suitable for LASIK, we are able to offer you LASEK instead. This procedure is very similar to LASIK but differs in that it is suitable for patients whose corneas are too thin, steep or irregular for LASIK. This is because the technique does not penetrate the cornea as deeply as LASIK.
Like LASIK, LASEK is performed using anaesthetic drops and is quick and painless. It produces the same amazing visual acuity and can correct short-sight, long sight and astigmatism.
Your Suitability for LASEK
LASEK is suitable for prescriptions up to:
- -10.00DS (short-sight)
- +3.00DS (long-sight)
- -5.00DC (astigmatism)
The Wavefront technology involved in both LASEK and LASIK procedures is almost identical and the visual results are the same, so if your cornea is found to be thick enough for either procedure, how do you know which one to choose? On the whole, most patients tend to choose LASIK because:
Following treatment, LASIK is painless whilst there is more dryness and sensitivity associated with LASEK. However, this settles down quickly during the first few days after treatment.
The visual outcome is the same but it takes slightly longer to reach with LASEK than with LASIK.
Most patients achieve driving standard vision 24-48 hours after LASIK whereas it can take up to a week with LASEK.
The LASEK Procedure
The pre-surgical assessment consists of the same diagnostic tests as with LASIK but for LASEK, instead of using a laser, the micro-thin flap in the cornea is created using a special diluted alcohol solution to soften the cells of the epithelium, the most superficial layer of the eye.
The epithelium is moved aside and the cornea is re-shaped using the Technolas z100 excimer laser, which is programmed to your exact prescription requirements from your Wavefront readings.
Immediately after surgery a protective contact lens is inserted to protect the cornea whilst the epithelium heals and regenerates. You are asked to wear this lens for approximately four days when it will be removed at your post-surgery consultation.
For those patients not suitable for LASIK, LASEK treatment is a very safe and effective alternative. Advanced Vision Care’s surgeons and optometrists will perform a rigorous assessment prior to the day of surgery to advise you on your suitability for the procedure.
AVC LASEK Technology
LASEK is performed using the same highly advanced technology used for LASIK to give you exceptional quality of vision and the best possible safety standards.
