Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL)
AVC is the UK’s leading clinic for the non-laser, reversible alternative Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) procedure.
A small percentage of AVC’s patients discover that they are unsuitable for Laser Eye Surgery due to their prescription falling outside the recommended parameter, or because their corneas are too thin. Fortunately, Implantable Contact Lenses are a non-laser alternative we offer at AVC.
Rather than changing the shape of the cornea, Implantable Contact Lenses are permanent miniature contact lenses that are implanted into the eye to enhance its natural focussing ability. This provides excellent quality of vision for a wide range of prescriptions.
Implantable Contact Lenses are made from a material called Collamer, which is accepted by the eyes and therefore the body’s immune system does not react or reject it as a foreign body. As the Lens is so tiny, soft and flexible, it can be folded up and implanted into the eye in seconds through a tiny self-sealing opening. Once it has been implanted the lens unfolds into its correct shape inside the eye. There are no stitches and as the lens sits behind the iris, it is not visible to the naked eye like other lenses.
Anaesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eye / eyes throughout the procedure, and antibiotic eye drops are given to prevent the minimal risk of infection. Patients experience very little discomfort throughout the 30 minute session (although a one week interval is needed between each eye), and most are able to leave our clinic the same day.
Thereafter, they’ll be ready to enjoy what our surgeon Mr. C.T. Pillai describes as newly improved “HD vision.”
At AVC we can treat prescriptions up to -23.00D or +11.00D with ICL and patients with astigmatism up to -5.00D CYL or +5.00D CYL. Implantable Contact Lenses can also help patients suffering from Keratoconus.
