Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)
Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) is a non-laser treatment commonly used for those patients over the age of 40 who have deteriorating near vision.
This is a three minute, non-invasive procedure that incorporates anaesthetic eye drops and the very latest LightTouch technology. Using radio waves, we gently reshape the cornea, improving your vision almost immediately. The treatment neither requires the use of a laser or any cutting, making it a reassuringly convenient alternative to reading glasses.
The ViewPoint® CK System from Refractec is used during the procedure, and this is the first FDA-approved refractive technology for improving the loss of near vision that accompanies presbyopia.
You can expect to experience the following during treatment:
- After your surgeon has applied a topical anaesthetic (eye drops), controlled radiofrequency energy is applied in a circular pattern to shrink the corneal tissue. Using radiofrequency means AVC can change how the eye focuses light by reshaping the cornea to make it steeper
- The circular pattern is applied in the periphery of your cornea, and therefore minimizes interference with your line of sight
- A device called a ’speculum’ holds your eye open during the procedure
- Once the treatment is complete, patients do not need to wear an eye patch and can usually return to work or normal activities the very next day. Vision begins to improve in approximately a week
- CK is typically performed on just one eye. However, if your prescription requires treatment in both eyes, the CK treatment can be performed on both on the same day – one eye immediately after the other
Most patients are comfortable having the procedure performed on both eyes on the same day because the procedure is minimally invasive and takes less than three minutes per eye.
Additional treatment may be necessary in the future; while CK can turn back the clock on your vision, it cannot stop the clock entirely. The CK procedure can also help patients with long-sightedness or hyperopia, a condition in which the eye is too flat.
More than 150,000 CK treatments have been performed worldwide with an extraordinary rate of success, so if you think AVC can help you, just get in touch.
