Cataract Surgery
Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy due to a denaturation of protein, and this is often a side-effect of ageing. Sufferers experience blurred vision, loss of colour intensity and the need for frequent eye glass prescription changes. In a ‘normal’ eye, light passes through the transparent lens to the retina and then changes into nerve signals that are sent to the brain. This is where Cataracts pose a real problem, because the lens of the eye needs to be clear in order for the retina to receive a sharp image.
Treatment of Cataracts in the early stages commonly involves corrective glasses and / or contact lenses. However, there are no surgical alternatives, and if left untreated the lens becomes so cloudy it becomes impossible to see any detail and only some light. The most effective treatment is to surgically remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear and artificial lens. Surgery is safe and painless.
At AVC, Cataract Surgery is a micro-incision procedure that uses foldable lens technology and takes just fifteen minutes. It’s pain-free, stitch-free and injection-free. If you think that Cataract Surgery might be a real option for you, you can get an idea of what to expect by viewing the steps the procedure takes:
- A Cataract is removed by ’small-incision’ surgery under topical anaesthesia (eye drops only)
- The Cataract is broken into microscopic particles using ultrasound waves (a technique called Phacoemulsification) and gently removed from the eye
- Following the removal of the natural lens, a specialist permanent artificial intraocular lens implant is inserted
Lens implant options for patients include: monofocal implants that eliminate distance glasses, toric implants for patients with astigmatism and multifocal implants that eradicate the need for distance and reading glasses.
If you are treated for Catracts at AVC, you can be rest assured that you’ll be able to return to the comfort of your own home the very same day – with just an hour of recovery time.
